Recently engaged? Make sure you know what choices are available

Updated: Aug 6, 2019

Congratulations on your engagement!

So what are your priorities? Are you busy making lists of all the things you need to organise?

Do you know what different options are available to you?

You probably realise that you don’t have to get married in a church, but did you know that you don’t have to pay for your ceremony to take place at a ‘venue’ at all?

Once you have registered your marriage at the Register Office (check your regional office for prices, often much cheaper on a Monday morning), your wedding ceremony can take place wherever you like – in your house, your garden, in a wood, on the beach… Some celebrants who scuba dive will even offer to arrange an underwater ceremony!

If you do prefer to choose a licensed venue (hotel, golf club, Hall etc), the Register Office will offer a registrar to lead the ceremony but often you won’t know who that’s going to be until a week or two beforehand. Your ceremony, therefore, is unlikely to be very personal (and likely to cost more than a celebrant).

In choosing a celebrant to lead your ceremony, you can work together to plan a really personal and bespoke wedding. You can include unique wedding elements of your choice, from handfasting to broom jumping to tree planting, and you can include as many or as few people in your ceremony as you want, to make it a day you will cherish forever!
